The Head of Financial Intelligence is Named Prime Minister by a Madagascar Leader

Days after the cabinet was dissolved, Mamitiana Rajaonarison, the chief of Madagascar’s financial intelligence unit, was named prime minister by the country’s transitional leader, Michael Randrianirina.

Rajaonarison, who has headed the anti-money-laundering organization SAMIFIN since 2021, will lead a new government, the presidency announced in a statement on Sunday. He takes over for Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, a former senior gendarmerie officer and career civil administrator who was fired last week due to the cabinet’s abrupt dissolution.

Rajaonarivelo was appointed soon after Randrianirina assumed power in October during demonstrations that drove out former president Andry Rajoelina.

Speaking at a ceremony at the presidential palace in Antananarivo, Randrianirina described the new premier as a man of integrity who “cannot be bought with money” and stated that the country needed “bold decisions” at a crucial time.

Randrianirina maintains that the Constitutional Court lawfully gave him power, refuting claims that his ascent to power amounted to a coup. He has pledged a two-year transition that will include national consultations, the creation of a new constitution, and 2027 presidential elections.
