The UN Urges Libyan Authorities to Uphold Migrant Rights

In order to safeguard the rights and dignity of migrants and refugees, the UN has urged both the government supported by the UN and a competing government in Libyan to implement immediate changes.

It also called for a halt to the return of migrant boats to Libya until human rights are guaranteed in a new report released Tuesday by its Human Rights Office and the UN Support Mission in Libya.

It discovered that systematic abuses and violations of human rights, such as sexual violence, torture, murder, and human trafficking, occur among migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in Libya.

They are “rounded up and abducted by networks of traffickers, often linked to the authorities,” as well as criminal organisations, according to the research. The report condemns “an exploitative model” that takes advantage of migrants’ “heightened vulnerability” and has turned into “a brutal and normalised reality.”

Libya has developed as a transit country for migrants escaping conflict and poverty travelling across the Mediterranean to Europe since the overthrow of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. According to the UN and international NGOs, the circumstances have encouraged human trafficking and mistreatment of migrants, who have been specifically targeted for slavery and extortion.
