Yoweri Museveni, The President of Uganda, Receives 71.65% of the Vote to win a Seventh Term
Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni has secured a seventh term in office after winning 71.65 percent of the vote, according to official results released on Saturday. The outcome extends his rule beyond four decades, despite a strong challenge from a younger opposition figure calling for change.
His main rival, musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, received 24.72 percent of the votes. Wine is expected to dispute the results. He has already criticised the election process, saying it was neither fair nor transparent. His concerns include a nationwide internet shutdown, heavy military presence, and the reported detention of several of his polling agents.
The election has also raised technical and procedural questions. On voting day, biometric voter identification machines reportedly failed in several areas, leading to delays, particularly in urban centres such as Kampala where opposition support is strong. As a result, officials reverted to manual voter registers.
Pro-democracy groups, who have long pushed for biometric systems to reduce manipulation, view the breakdown as a serious setback. The issue is likely to play a central role in any legal challenge to the declared results, as scrutiny grows over the credibility of the voting process.
