Survivors of the Mali Crisis Describe Sexual Assault and Murders Attributed to Russia’s Africa Corps
The Africa Corps, a new military unit under Russian authority, was accused of atrocities by Malians in a refugee camp where the Associated Press had exclusive access. The Russian mercenary organization Wagner, which had been helping the military regimes of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger combat extremists associated with al-Qaida and the Islamic State in the Sahel region of West Africa, was replaced earlier this year by Africa Corps.
The area has emerged as the world’s deadliest extremist hotspot. Like the fleeing, civilians claim to be entangled in the battle. The UN has documented violations on all fronts. However, the accusations against Africa Corps are fresh, and this is the first time the AP has covered them.
34 refugees in and around the camp in neighboring Mauritania were interviewed by the AP. They said that they had been raped and beheaded. In an improvised medical facility, a 14-year-old girl lay still with her mouth vast and her eyes vacant. Medical personnel rushed past her. The clinic’s women’s health manager, Bethsabee Djoman Elidje, stated that it was the last chance to save her life. According to Elidje, the girl had been in acute shock for days without receiving treatment due to an infection linked to sexual abuse.
