The country’s illegal pubs, referred to locally as Shebeens, have once again come under scrutiny following the early morning shooting at a bar within a hostel in the Saulville township. These kinds of illegal Shebeens are really causing us a problem as the police, because a lot of murders have been discovered at these illegal establishments,”

South Africa Police spokesman Athlenda Mathe told reporters. We really closed 11,975 of these unlawful Shebeens across the nation between April and September of this year. Therefore, it’s quite problematic because these mass shootings also occur at either illegal Shebeens or permitted establishments. As a result, we are stepping up our inspection procedures.

Shebeens have had multiple horrific shootings in recent years, including one in Johannesburg in 2022 that claimed 16 lives. Four more people perished in a mass shooting at a bar in a different province that same day.

However, recent mass murders in South Africa have not been limited to prisons. In September of last year, two houses on the same road in a remote area of the Eastern Cape province saw mass shootings that murdered 18 people, 15 of them women, minutes apart, according to police. Three AK-style assault rifles that authorities suspect were used in the shootings were found, and seven individuals were taken into custody and charged with numerous murders.
