A Somali Immigrant Describes Being Tortured in Libya, But He says His Desire for a Better life Still Motivates Him

Mohamed Abdi Awale, a Somali migrant, claims that his desire of traveling to the United States has persevered despite a difficult trip across Africa, months of torture by smugglers, and imprisonment in Libya. Awale is one of 165 Somalis who were just returned home after suffering terrible circumstances while trying to travel to Europe.

Awale claims that although living in America was his childhood goal, he was forced to try a risky overland path due to restrictions imposed by former President Donald Trump. “Living in the United States has been my long-term dream since I was a child, but when Trump came to power, my hope of moving there was dashed because he hates foreigners,” he stated. “I still hope to visit the United States, and I think that will happen after Trump’s term ends.”

He traveled through Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Uganda before being apprehended by smugglers close to the Libyan border and transported to Kufra, a well-known center for trafficking networks. He claims that torture was commonplace there. In order to demand a ransom from his family, captors recorded him being beaten.
