Food Distribution in Sudan is Improving, According to the UN, Although Certain Communities are Still Shut Off

The United Nations food agency said Wednesday that its ongoing efforts to combat severe hunger in Sudan are starting to produce encouraging results. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), aid distribution has been scaled up in 10 areas where famine was confirmed last year, and the risk has now been downgraded in nine of them. However, Sudan remains one of the world’s worst hunger crises, with famine persisting in two regions.

“That’s in the Darfur states and the Kordofan states in the south. One of the main challenges is access, especially in places like El-Fasher and Kadugli,” said Shaun Hughes, WFP’s regional emergency coordinator.

Hughes noted that a lack of resources continues to hinder operations. “We’re reaching four to five million people every month, but most are receiving reduced rations. By January, we won’t have the resources in the pipeline to sustain even that level of assistance,” he warned.

The war in Sudan began in April 2023 following a power struggle between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has killed over 40,000 people, though rights groups believe the true number is higher, and displaced more than 14 million, creating one of the world’s most significant humanitarian crises.
