After the RSF Took Over El-Fasher, Hundreds of People Were Subjected to Sexual Assault and Torture

Michel Lacharite, head of Emergency Operations at Doctors Without Borders (MSF), reported that the organization has treated over 500 victims of torture in recent months. In September alone, MSF documented more than 200 cases of sexual violence. After the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of El-Fasher during the weekend of October 26–27, thousands of people fled to Tawila. However, Lacharite noted that fewer than 10,000 new arrivals have reached Tawila since then.

Survivors who escaped El-Fasher described widespread and ethnically targeted killings, according to MSF. There are also reports that an unknown number of people are being held in the village of Qarni as they tried to flee. Lacharite confirmed that some detainees are being asked for money, but the exact number of those detained remains unclear.

El-Fasher had been under siege for over 500 days as the RSF fought Sudanese armed forces for control of the army’s last stronghold in the region. After the RSF captured the city, eyewitnesses described a wave of violence, with fighters reportedly carrying out hundreds of ethnically targeted killings. The RSF later announced that it had arrested several fighters suspected of carrying out summary executions in El-Fasher.
