WFP Draws Attention to the Eastern Democratic Republic’s Acute Food Crisis

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has sounded an urgent alarm, warning that three million people in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are now experiencing emergency levels of hunger. The number has nearly doubled in a year, driven by unending conflict and a deepening funding shortfall.

WFP Country Director Cynthia Jones painted a grim picture of life for affected families. “People are skipping meals and selling their few remaining possessions, even their last goat, just to survive,” she said.

According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, around 25 million people across the DRC are facing severe food insecurity, with three million at the emergency” level one step away from famine. The WFP cautioned that deaths from hunger are already being reported in parts of the east.

A mix of conflict, displacement, and economic collapse has fueled this humanitarian disaster. Fighting between M23 rebels—reportedly backed by Rwanda, which denies involvement—and Congolese government forces has displaced 5.2 million people, including 1.6 million in 2025 alone.
