A Man Who Was Mistakenly Released from a London Prison has Voluntarily Turned Himself Back in to Authorities

A man who was mistakenly released from a London prison has turned himself in three days after his accidental release. Billy Smith had been sentenced to four years in prison on Monday, but an administrative error at Wandsworth prison led to his unexpected freedom. The incident adds to growing concerns over the UK’s overcrowded prison system, which has increasingly become a political issue.

On the same day Smith was freed, another inmate, Brahim Kaddour-Cherif — an Algerian national and registered sex offender — was also wrongly released. He had been serving time for trespassing with intent to steal, and police are still searching for him.

Both men were released from Wandsworth, a 19th-century prison in southwest London that has faced criticism before. Two years ago, another inmate escaped by hiding underneath a food delivery truck.

These latest incidents come despite stricter security checks that were introduced after another major blunder. In October, Chelmsford Prison accidentally freed Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, an Ethiopian asylum seeker whose case had triggered anti-immigrant protests. He was recaptured two days later and deported.
