Relief and Celebrations as Israel and Hamas Agree to First Phase of Peace Plan

After Israel and Hamas declared they had reached an agreement on the first step of a US-proposed peace plan, there were festivities throughout the Gaza Strip on Thursday. Just days after the second anniversary of the Hamas onslaught on southern Israel, in which militants killed almost 1,200 people and abducted 251 more, there has been a significant development in the fight.

The proposal calls for the Israeli forces to start withdrawing from most of Gaza while Hamas releases all 20 surviving captives in the next few days in return for Palestinian inmates.

Palestinians in the center Gaza Strip’s Deir al-Balah applauded and cheered as hope for an end to the two-year conflict materialized, even before the agreement was approved by the Israeli Knesset. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been slain and Israel’s offensive against Hamas has destroyed Gaza.

Today, a great deal of excitement is spreading among all Palestinians, particularly those in Gaza, as a result of our celebration of the ceasefire and truce. God will hopefully provide us happiness,” said Um Mohammad Wadi, who was forced to flee Gaza City due to the Israeli offensive. “And hopefully, God willing this ceasefire will hold forever, the war will not return and we will live in safety and peace.
