At the UN General Assembly, The Palestinian President Condemns the October 7th Incident

Speaking on video after the US canceled his visa, the Palestinian president assured international leaders Thursday that his people “reject” the 2023 Hamas onslaught on Israel and that the militant group would not be allowed to run Gaza when the war was over and would have to turn over its weapons.

Palestinians in Gaza “have been facing a war of genocide, destruction, starvation, and displacement” by Israel, Mahmoud Abbas told the U.N. General Assembly. His remarks coincided with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled in-person appearance in New York on Friday.

Abbas stated that Palestinian authorities “reject” the October 7 action carried out by Hamas and that it does not speak for their people, even though he described in graphic detail the dead and destruction in Gaza. He also outlined his ideas for the form of administration that he believes the Palestinian Authority is “ready to bear full responsibility for governance and security” in the territories after the war is finished.

Hamas will have no role to play in governance,” he continued, adding that they would have to turn up their weapons to the Palestinian government. “If Palestine is not freed, there can be no justice,” Abbas declared. Abbas praised the world leaders who had supported Palestinians throughout the Gaza war in a succinct but determined speech.
