UN Mission sets up new Base in South Sudan to Safeguard Civilians

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) announced Friday that it is building a new temporary base in the Tambura region to help protect civilians. This is important because by setting up this base, we can increase patrols, strengthen community engagement, and support peace mediation efforts on the ground,” said Emmanuel Dukundane, UNMISS Civil Affairs Officer.

Violence in Greater Tambura has flared repeatedly since 2021, leaving many dead and forcing thousands from their homes. Many civilians now live in camps for displaced people, where UN peacekeepers have stepped up patrols to provide security.

South Sudan continues to struggle with the legacy of a civil war that killed nearly 400,000 people and pushed parts of the country into famine. Despite being rich in oil, the nation faces widespread corruption and depends heavily on international aid, a reliance made even more difficult after recent cuts to foreign assistance.
