Kenyan Mask Salesman Boniface Kariuki, Who was Shot at Close Range, was Buried

The burial of a citizen who was shot in the head at close range by a police officer in June was attended by Kenyans on Friday. Journalists’ footage of Boniface Kariuki’s killing has come to represent the nation’s demonstrators calling for accountability, improved government, and an end to police violence.
Critics point to President William Ruto’s declaration that he will stop the demonstrations and his call for police to shoot demonstrators in the legs. The former street seller who was shot dead by police during protests in Nairobi on June 17, 2025, had a burial attended by a large number of mourners in his village of Muranga, Central Kenya. Numerous people voiced their shock at the event, pointing out that the government should pay the deceased’s relatives.
The cops should be protecting us, but instead they use their weapons against us. What does that signify? It’s not good. Such incidents shouldn’t happen again, and the government need to be held accountable. “They ought to pay the family,” remarked mourner Ben Gitoho. Police brutality is a persistent problem in Kenya, and human rights organisations and the international community have urged police officials to exercise restraint.
