Putin is Challenged by Zelenskyy to Lead Negotiations in Turkey

In response to intense pressure from U.S. and European leaders to find a settlement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday that he will be waiting for Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in the Turkish capital this week to hold in-person discussions regarding the more than three-year conflict.
As part of Washington’s efforts to end the conflict, U.S. President Donald Trump has urged the two sides to attend the talks, but Putin has not yet stated if he will be there.
In Kyiv, Zelenskyy informed reporters that he will be in Ankara on Thursday to carry out the talks. He said he will wait for Putin to arrive before meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“I have to negotiate a ceasefire with (Putin), because only he can decide on it,” Zelenskyy declared, adding that he will “do everything to agree on a ceasefire.” According to Zelenskyy, both presidents would fly from Ankara to Istanbul if Putin decides to have the summit there. The last indication that Putin does not wish to end the war is if he does not show up and play games,” Zelenskyy stated.
