Kenyan Commitment to Haiti: Enhanced police Deployment Announced
Kenyan President William Ruto visited Haiti last Saturday, claiming that the deployment of a Kenyan police team combatting gangs had resulted in a significant improvement in the country’s security.
On Thursday, President Ruto addressed the 79th annual UN General Assembly in New York, urging the international community to support the Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti, which is commanded by Kenyan personnel.
The current operation, which is based on voluntary contributions, has experienced challenges as some countries reassess their participation while others prioritise different issues.
The US intends to turn its previously proposed police mission to resolve Haiti’s security concerns into a United Nations peacekeeping force. This change is intended to permit additional funding for the Caribbean nation.
According to a senior US diplomat focused on Western Hemisphere relations, Washington is seeking Security Council approval to convert Kenya’s multinational security support project into a blue helmet operation.
