“Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló Declines Second Term Amid Political Uncertainty”

In an announcement on September 11, 2024, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau stated that he will not run for reelection in November of that year. The nation of West Africa is seeing further political unrest as a result of this decision, which was made just two months before the election.

Since taking office in 2020, Embaló has experienced a difficult presidency that included two coup attempts, the most recent of which happened in the middle of 2023. Since attaining independence in 1974, Guinea-Bissau, which has long been afflicted by political unrest, has had several coups.

The president just mentioned that his wife had asked him to stand down, without offering any further explanation. While in office, Embaló twice dissolved the nation’s Parliament but was unable to secure enough support to enact any meaningful reforms, such as amending the constitution to remove the country’s semi-presidential government.

He ruled out his primary political adversaries, Domingos Simões Pereira, Nuno Gomes Nabiam, and Braima Camara, saying, “None of them will replace me,” even though he declined to nominate a viable successor.
