Olympic Athlete from Uganda Whose Body was Burned on Fire by Her Partner is Given to Her Family

Before her burial the next day, Rebecca Cheptegei, an Olympic athlete from Uganda, passed away after her partner set her on fire in Kenya. Her family and opponents of gendercide received her body on Friday.

Numerous activists who had marched to the morgue of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in the western city of Eldoret, screaming anti-femicide slogans, met with Cheptegei’s family on Friday.

In yet another instance of gender-based violence in recent years, she is the fourth female athlete to have died at the hands of her spouse in Kenya.

In honor of athlete Agnes Tirop, who was fatally stabbed in 2021, Viola Cheptoo, the founder of Tirop Angels, stated that stakeholders must make sure this is the final athlete fatality brought on by gender-based violence.

She remarked, “We are here to say that enough is enough; we are sick and tired of burying our sisters because of GBV.”

Athletes and loved ones observed Cheptegei’s body, which had 80% burns after being doused in gasoline by her partner Dickson Ndiema, in a solemn atmosphere at the morgue. Ndiema passed away after suffering 30% body burns.
