A Migrant Boat Capsizing Off the Coast of Libya Leaves One Person Dead and Twenty-Two Missing
The latest maritime tragedy involving migrants hoping for a better life in Europe occurred on Tuesday when a boat carrying migrants collapsed off the coast of Libya, according to Libyan authorities, leaving one person dead and 22 missing.
In the town of Tobruk in eastern Libya, the coast guard reported that nine of the 32 migrants on board the boat had been saved. According to the coast guard, survivors have been transported to a port in Tobruk.
The Abreen, a local relief organization, said that the boat traveled from the Bab al-Zaitoun area, which is located 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of Tobruk. The organization, which assists migrants in eastern Libya, stated that the boat overturned due to a mechanical malfunction in its engine.
According to the group, the nine migrants who survived were transferred to a hospital. The migrants on the boat were claimed to be from Egypt and Syria.
The country in North Africa has become the main hub for migrants from the Middle East and Africa who are escaping poverty and conflict in recent years. In the village of Zuwara on Libya’s western coast, at least 61 migrants—including women and children—drowned in December.
Following an uprising supported by NATO in 2011 that overthrew and murdered longstanding tyrant Moammar Gadhafi, Libya descended into turmoil.
