While War Continues, South Sudan will Have Elections in December
Despite teetering on the verge of civil war, elections are scheduled for December in South Sudan after years of postponement. As the president’s government forces battle factions that are only loosely associated with the vice president, experts are warning of a return to full-fledged warfare.
Tens of thousands have been forced to leave their homes due to the violence, and relief organizations are frequently targeted and find it difficult to operate. The final civil war between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar ended in 2018 with a peace agreement.
Elections were scheduled to occur in 2022 under the agreement, however they were continually postponed. Elections must go place this year, according to the nation’s communications minister. The country would hold its first national elections since gaining independence from Sudan fifteen years ago if the process proceeds. Other conditions of the peace agreement, such as the unification of opposing armed forces, have not been met. The country is also struggling with extreme poverty and corruption.
