What NATO Agreed To At The Summit in Washington

40 Billion Euros Promised

NATO members have promised to continue providing Ukraine with at least 40 billion euros ($43 billion) in support, a level of support that has not changed since Russia’s invasion.

“Through proportional contributions, allies intend to provide a minimum baseline funding of 40 billion euros within the next year, and to provide sustainable levels of security assistance for Ukraine to prevail,” the declaration from the conference stated.

While the political pledge is intended to provide aid a stronger foundation, it is not legally enforceable and may be disregarded by succeeding administrations.

Stoltenberg had initially wanted to convince allies to commit for a number of years, but the US insisted on a review the next year.

“Unchangeable Route” to Becoming a Member

Ukraine truly wanted a clear invitation to join NATO in the near future, but NATO refused to provide it to them.

Rather, the leaders reiterated their commitment to Kyiv’s membership “when allies agree and conditions are met.”

As a gesture of goodwill for Ukraine, leaders did concur to declare that Kyiv’s route to membership is “irreversible.”

Additionally, they said that the NATO package “constitutes a bridge” for membership.
