Victoire Ingabire, the Head of the Rwandan Opposition, was Refused Bail

Judges at the Kicukiro Primary Court in Kigali refused to grant Rwandan opposition leader Victoire Ingabire bail on Tuesday, meaning she will stay in custody. The judge maintained her in pre-trial detention due to the possibility of escape and potential interference with an ongoing investigation.
Ingabire, a well-known opponent of President Paul Kagame, is charged with six counts, including creating or being a member of an unlawful organization and disseminating hate speech meant to incite opposition to the government abroad. The prosecution contends that there is sufficient evidence to support her incarceration pending the outcome of the inquiry.
Several of her supporters were arrested in 2021 after taking part in an online political training program, which is linked to the allegations. The book, “How to Topple a Dictator When You’re Alone, Small, and Unarmed,” was discussed during the session, according to authorities, who say it shows intent to instigate disturbance.
Ingabire has previously referred to the charges as politically driven and disputed all of the allegations. She has long been among the few opposition leaders still actively involved in Rwandan politics, since many others have fled the country. After returning after years of exile in the Netherlands, she was imprisoned in 2010 and then released in 2018 following a presidential pardon.
