Uganda Consents to Accept US-Deported Migrants With no Criminal Histories

According to the foreign ministry on Thursday, Uganda has reached an agreement with the United States to accept deported migrants, provided that they are not unaccompanied minors and have no criminal history.
In a statement, the ministry stated that although the agreement had been reached, the specifics were still being finalized. Although it did not go into detail about what Uganda may receive in exchange for taking in deportees, it did add that it preferred that the migrants transported there be of African nationalities.
Regarding what it described as “diplomatic negotiations,” the US embassy in Uganda said that diplomats were working to support US President Donald Trump’s “policy of keeping Americans safe,” but it declined to comment.
But later in Washington, the State Department reported that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had called Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to discuss a number of concerns, including migration.
The agency claimed the call focused on “migration, reciprocal trade, and commercial ties” and that Rubio had “thanked Uganda for serving as a model of regional stability, including its valuable contributions to peacekeeping in East Africa.
