Trump and Ramaphosa Agree to Continue Trade Negotiations Despite US Tariffs

On August 6, 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump over the phone, discussing ongoing discussions and bilateral trade concerns. Both leaders pledged to keep talking through their trade teams despite recent losses due to hefty tariffs.
The call is being made in light of a 30% U.S. tax on South African goods, which has caused significant domestic economic anxiety. Pretoria has established a “Export Support Desk” and is developing a support package specifically targeted at the automotive and agricultural industries, which combined might jeopardize tens of thousands of jobs, to lessen the impact.
With the local currency trading at about 17.69 to the dollar, the South African rand shown tenacity and gained ground as a result of rising gold prices and a declining value of the US dollar.
Ramaphosa and Trump’s phone conversation shows that both parties are eager to continue talking even as South Africa struggles with the wide-ranging U.S. tariffs. All eyes will be on whether diplomacy can ease the economic pressure as trade teams get ready for in-depth talks.
