The WHO Chief Denounces the Appalling” Strike that Killed over 40 People in a Hospital Attack in Sudan

More than 40 people, including children and medical personnel, have been killed in a catastrophic attack on Al Mujlad Hospital in the West Kordofan state of Sudan. This is one of the bloodiest attacks on healthcare since the civil war in the nation started in April 2023.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the head of the World Health Organisation (WHO), called the event “appalling” and reiterated the urgent need to put a stop to violence against medical institutions.

The attack took place on Saturday close to the frontlines of intense combat between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), whose war has left Sudan in what the UN refers to as the greatest humanitarian disaster in history.

According to WHO’s Sudan office, at least six children and five medical personnel were among the more than 40 people killed when lethal force struck Al Mujlad Hospital, the sole operational healthcare institution in the region. This cannot be emphasised enough: health assaults must end everywhere! Dr. Tedros wrote on X, previously Twitter, “Hospitals are not a target.”

There is still disagreement on who is responsible for the attack. Although the Sudanese army has not yet responded to the accusations, the RSF and two well-known civil society organisations blame the army, claiming the strike targeted RSF fighters stationed inside the hospital.
