The US Proclaims Genocide in Sudan and Imposes Sanctions on the RSF Leader and Businesses
In the ongoing civil war with the Sudanese military, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and resulted in a dire humanitarian situation, the Biden administration has proclaimed that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its affiliates are committing genocide.
The RSF has been charged by Secretary of State Antony Blinken of committing systematic attacks against civilians, including sexual assault, ethnic-based deaths, and blocking access to life-saving assistance.
RSF commander Mohammad Hamdan Daglo Mousa (Hemedti) and seven RSF-owned businesses in the United Arab Emirates, including a gold-smuggling company, have been subject to sanctions. Despite evidence to the contrary, the UAE has denied arming the RSF. The violence has displaced millions of people since it started in April 2023, and hunger has been reported in several areas of Sudan.
In addition to pressing for substantive ceasefire talks, the United States seeks to hold offenders accountable. The action has been praised by advocacy organizations, which stress how urgent it is to address the atrocities.
