The Presidential Election in Malawi is Now Counting Votes

Following polling station closures at 14:00 GMT in Malawi’s pivotal presidential election, vote counting has started. Both candidates are focused on reviving the economy, and current President Lazarus Chakwera is vying for a second term against former President Peter Mutharika. A runoff may be held if no contender receives more than 50% of the vote.

Despite minor delays at voting places because to fingerprint reader problems, about 3.7 million votes were cast today. Parliamentary results are anticipated by September 30 while presidential results are to be announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission by September 24.

However, according to Reuters, there were delays at several polling places, mostly because of problems with biometric fingerprint readers. The electoral commission addressed the issue in spite of the difficulties, stating that some “queueing challenges” existed but that they were well handled.

Voters who couldn’t write might mark their ballots with an inked fingerprint, while others may use conventional pens. There are 15 other contenders, including Joyce Banda, the nation’s only female head of state, and another former president, even though the election is mainly seen as a two-person contest between Chakwera and Mutharika.
