The President of the DR Congo Lays Forth the Criteria For a National Dialogue
President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo has said again that he wants everyone in the country to be able to talk to each other in a calm and open way. In a speech to diplomats in Kinshasa on Saturday, he claimed that national unity was “more than ever a basic need.”
His statements come at a time when the army and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels are still fighting in the east of the country. Some opposition groups have called for an inter-Congolese national dialogue, and Angolan President João Lourenço has also discussed it in recent weeks.
Tshisekedi, on the other hand, set conditions for it to happen, such as that it must happen on native soil and be controlled by institutions. The president also stressed that the process should not make people question his legitimacy or the validity of the institutions that were elected by all citizens.
Even though some of the opposition is challenging his election and criticising how he runs the country, this is still true.Lastly, he said that the procedure should not try to change court decisions that have already been made.
