The Military chief of Gabon Declares his Intention to run for President

Brice Oligui Nguema, the military commander of Gabon, has declared his intention to run for president in April, nearly two years after leading a coup that ended the more than fifty years of Bongo clan control.

Following a transitional period, Nguema had promised to return control to citizens once President Ali Bongo was overthrown in August 2023. A new electoral rule that was approved by the interim Parliament in January allows magistrates and members of the armed forces to run for office.

The declaration was made by Nguema during a speech in the capital of Gabon. The 50-year-old urged the audience to support his candidature, describing his vision for the country as a “Gabon rising from the ashes.”

According to the Facebook page Infos CTRI officiel, the former chief of the presidential guard will need to step down from his current position, at least temporarily, in order to apply for the position.

The website further stated, “He will go back to the barracks if he is not elected. Gabon’s elections are scheduled on April 12.
