The Horrific Gang Attack in Haiti Last Week Claimed 115 Lives

At least 115 people have been killed in a vicious gang attack on a small village in central Haiti last week, a local official told The Associated Press on Wednesday. One of the largest murders in Haitian history occurred on October 3, when people of Pont-Sondé were attacked. Saint-Nicolas, the only hospital in the neighbouring city of Saint-Marc, was treating dozens of attack victims. The majority were receiving treatment for bullet wounds, although a handful displayed knife wounds.

As authorities continue to search for victims and have been unable to reach some parts of the town, Myriam Fièvre, the mayor of Saint-Marc, announced Wednesday that the death toll had increased to 115 and will probably continue to rise. The Gran Grif gang stormed the town of Pont-Sondé in the central Artibonite region last week, killing at least 70 people, according to a previous U.N. report. According to a local human rights organisation, the gang used kayaks to approach Pont-Sondé and surprise the locals, killing infants, young mothers, and the elderly.

Since the gang had warned in a social media video that it intended to target Pont-Sondé, survivors have questioned why authorities did nothing to halt the attack. Over 6,200 survivors have temporarily relocated to Saint-Marc, a seaside city, and the surrounding surroundings after fleeing Pont-Sondé. While Saint-Marc is grappling with the unexpected surge of individuals, Fièvre cautioned that the Gran Grif gang is sneaking in.
