Teen Arrested in Turkey Following Gun Attack on Officers

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in western Turkey after allegedly carrying out a deadly shotgun attack on a police station that left two officers dead and several others wounded, officials confirmed on Monday.

The attack occurred in the Balcova district of Izmir, the country’s third-largest city. Authorities said the assailant fatally shot a police officer on guard outside the station before killing a police chief inspector during an ensuing exchange of fire. Two additional officers and a civilian were injured, one of them critically.

Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban confirmed the details, while President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said in a speech: “The perpetrator of the incident, a 16-year-old man, has been apprehended. His connections are being investigated. I offer my condolences to our entire police force.

Video footage broadcast on Turkish television showed the attacker in a black balaclava, armed with a rifle. In one clip, he can be heard shouting “God is Great” while lying wounded on the ground as police attempted to restrain him.

Bystanders shouted “Take his weapon!” and “Call an ambulance!” before the suspect reached into a rucksack and hurled an object, sparking panic among the crowd. Shouts of “Bomb!” and Shoot him!” could be heard before officers moved in.
