Tanzanian Opposition Claims that Attorneys and Relatives Have not Met the Incarcerated Leader

The biggest opposition party in Tanzania said it had been denied access to its leader, who is being held on treason charges. CHADEMA stated on Friday that Tundu Lissu had been detained at a Dar es Salaam jail since his arrest on April 9 and that neither his family nor his attorneys had seen him.

The party said in a statement that Lissu’s safety was the responsibility of the Tanzanian government and Prisons Service. The Prisons Service promptly refuted that Lissu had been transferred from prison. The agency dismissed CHADEMA’s concerns as unfounded in a statement.

In the 2020 Tanzanian presidential election, Lissu finished in second place. He demanded election changes in a speech last week, which led to his detention and subsequent treason charges. The speech, according to the prosecution, was intended to incite an insurrection.

Critics claim that President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration has increased persecution against the opposition in anticipation of another presidential election. The electoral commission prohibited CHADEMA from participating in the polls this week after the party declined to sign a pledge promising to follow its directives.
