Sudan Seeks Urgent aid After Darfur Landslide Kills over 1,000

Sudan has issued an urgent appeal for international assistance after a massive landslide destroyed an entire village in Darfur, killing more than 1,000 people in one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in recent years.

The village of Tarasin in Central Darfur’s Marrah Mountains was “completely leveled to the ground” following days of heavy rain, the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army (SLM-A) said in a statement. The group reported that nearly all residents perished, with only one survivor found.

SLM-A leader Abdel-Wahid Nour urged the United Nations and aid agencies to intervene, stressing that “the scale and magnitude of the disaster are immense and defy description.” Sudan’s ruling Sovereign Council said it mourned the loss of “hundreds of innocent residents” and vowed to mobilize “all possible capabilities” to support the region.

Footage from local media showed vast destruction, with people combing through rubble between the mountains. Luca Renda, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, said he was “deeply saddened” and noted that local reports suggest between 300 and 1,000 deaths. He confirmed the U.N. and partners are mobilizing aid to assist affected communities.
