Rwanda will be Sued by the DRC in an East African Court for Alleged Infractions
On September 26, in Arusha, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) said that it would sue Rwanda at the East African Court of Justice.
In the ongoing violence in the eastern Congo, Rwanda is accused by the DRC of breaching its sovereignty, atrocities against people, and violations of international law.
Along with specialists from the US and the UN, Tshisekedi charges neighboring Rwanda of providing military support to M23.
Although Rwanda disputes the accusation, it pointed to a concentration of Congolese military close to the border in February and essentially acknowledged having troops and missile systems in the eastern Congo to protect its security.
Samuel Mbemba, the Congolese deputy minister of justice, pushed the court to hear the issue and is the reason behind this legal action. The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights is also accusing Rwanda.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is advocating for responsibility and pressing the International Criminal Court (ICC) to expedite its probe into Rwanda’s conduct. A campaign called “Justice for the DRC” has been started by the government to demand justice for the victims.
