Residents of Uvira, DRC, are Devastated by the Rising Waters of Lake Tanganyika

The rising waters of Lake Tanganyika are causing a serious humanitarian problem in the South Kivu city of Uvira. More than 36,000 people have been displaced and over 3,000 homes have been submerged as a result of the extensive damage caused by the water. Thousands of people are in urgent need of aid as the situation worsens months after the initial floods started.

The population now faces additional risks as a result of the water, such as a rise in hippos encounters. Residents are seriously threatened by these animals, who have been forced from their natural habitats.

According to Uvira native Furaha Nsimire, “Hippos spend the day hidden in the water and emerge at night.” They may assault people as a result of the rising seas. These beasts put our lives in danger. Since they ruin everything, we are unable to raise crops any more.

Families have been forced to flee their houses due to the destruction and seek safety in overcrowded shelters or with other families. There is no chance of a fast return to routine, and entire neighbourhoods are still under water.
