President Putin of Russia is Prepared to Start nuclear Weapons Testing again, but Only if the United States Does so First
Russian President Vladimir Putin has directed his officials to prepare for the potential resumption of nuclear testing, he said during a Security Council meeting on Wednesday. The order follows comments from President Trump last week suggesting that the United States might restart its own atomic tests.
Putin instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defense, intelligence agencies, and other relevant government bodies to gather more information, analyze the situation, and submit coordinated proposals regarding possible preparations for nuclear weapons tests. He emphasized that Russia would only conduct such tests if the United States did so first.
President Trump, speaking in South Korea, appeared to hint at a possible American return to nuclear testing for the first time in three decades. However, U.S. Energy Secretary later clarified that the planned system upgrades would not involve actual nuclear explosions.
The remarks from both leaders come after Putin announced recent successful tests of Russia’s nuclear-powered cruise missile and underwater drone capabilities. The U.S. military also continues to test nuclear-capable delivery systems but has refrained from detonating nuclear weapons since 1992.
Although the United States signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, it has yet to ratify it. The treaty has been largely observed by all major nuclear powers, with North Korea remaining the only nation to carry out nuclear tests in recent years.
