President Ouattara of Ivory Coast Will Run for a Fourth Term

Longtime leader Alassane Ouattara has put an end to months of uncertainty by announcing he will run for a fourth term in power, three months before Ivory Coast’s presidential election. In a broadcast speech on Tuesday, he stated, “I am a candidate because I want our beloved Côte d’Ivoire to continue to remain a prosperous country, in peace and security.”
The 83-year-old president stated that he is eligible to serve another term, citing his health and the nation’s Constitution. Ouattara, who has been president since 2011, claimed that the nation was dealing with previously unheard-of financial, economic, and security difficulties.
The sub-region is experiencing an increase in the terrorist threat, and our nation is at risk from global economic uncertainties,” he stated. He went on to say that he thought someone with expertise was needed to handle this scenario. Ouattara’s presidential majority has been demanding his candidacy at nationwide protests for months.
His Rally of Houphouëtists for Democracy and Peace (RHDP) party hailed his performance in power and referred to him as the only guarantee of stability in the sub-region when it nominated him as its candidate.
