On The list of the World’s most Ignored Displacement Problems, Cameroon Comes in First

According to an annual list published on Tuesday by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Cameroon is now the most overlooked displacement issue in the world.
Three criteria a lack of media attention, a lack of practical political efforts, and a lack of humanitarian funding—were used by the NGO to list the ten most overlooked displacement crises in 2024. For the first time since 2019, Cameroon has surpassed Burkina Faso to take the top spot on the list.
In the extreme north of Cameroon, the Lake Chad Basin is also the scene of an ongoing war with armed non-state actors. Displacement has been caused by local violence and water shortages, the latter of which climate change has made worse.
Nearly half a million refugees from bordering countries, mostly Nigeria and the Central African Republic, are also welcomed in Cameroon. Cameroon’s issue, according to the Norwegian Refugee Council, is “a case study in global neglect: little diplomacy, underfunded, and underreported.
The United States and numerous European nations are among the main donors that are reducing their international aid expenditures, which might make the situation worse.
