‘True Buddy’ Belarus is Praised by the Chinese President

On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jingping and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko met in Beijing. Xi encouraged the Russian ally to stand with Beijing against “hegemony and bullying” and hailed sanctions-hit Belarus as a real friend of China.

He also called the two nations “good partners” and congratulated the leader of Belarus on winning reelection. This three-day visit is Lukashenko’s first since he was proclaimed the victor of the much criticised referendum in January, extending his 31-year reign over the former Soviet country He said that the West is putting pressure on China and Belarus.

“You have accurately identified the primary aspect of the present era, which is the unparalleled Western pressure on us, particularly the People’s Republic of China,” he stated. Lukashenko continued that the “eyes of many states” were on Beijing since it “will not allow the world order to be broken.”

Due to its support for Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, Belarus’ economy has been severely impacted by trade tariffs and sanctions imposed by the West. In addition to looking to Beijing for investment and loans, Minsk is also looking to China for assistance in modernising and reforming its industry
