Benin: Former Head of State Boni Yayi Denies a Comeback

Boni Yayi has stated that he is only accessible as an elder to help maintain peace, stability, and democracy in Benin, ruling out a new run for the president. Yayi emphasized in a video message on Friday the importance of communication. In Benin, there was a lot of conjecture that Yayi, who was president from 2006 to 2016, was thinking about running for office.

According to Benin’s constitution, a former president who has completed two terms is not eligible to run for office again. The incumbent finance minister, Romuald Wadagni, has been chosen by the ruling party to succeed departing President Patrice Talon.

For him to run for a third term, there were worries that Talon would try to amend the constitution. In April 2026, the west African nation will cast its ballot for a new president. In Benin, there was a lot of chatter that Yayi, who was president from 2006 to 2016, had been thinking about competing for office.
