Nearly Two Years after the Toppling of Assad, Syrian Children Return to School Amid the Destruction

School bells are ringing again across Syria, but for thousands of youngsters, returning to class provides little relief, with each school day serving as a reminder of the toll the conflict has taken. Tasnim, eight, walks several km home from school each day, passing through destroyed streets and the remnants of another school nearby.

Two years ago, her family returned to Syria due to a lack of alternatives.When we returned to Damascus, I enrolled in a school here. Because all of the schools around our house have been destroyed and are no longer operational, I transferred to a school further away. Going back and forth every day is difficult. “I wish the nearby schools were not damaged,” Tasnim stated. According to the UN refugee agency, more than three million Syrians who had been displaced will have returned home by December 2025, a year after the Assad administration fell.

Tasnim’s house still stands among Damascus’ rubble. Due to a lack of electricity, she can only study during daytime hours.When I get home from school, I assist my father with his job and occasionally accompany him to submit it to his employer. I then return to study during the day because the battery runs out of power at nite and there is no light. “After that, I go to bed,” she explained.
