Morocco’s King Chooses the Country’s first Female Prime Minister

On Tuesday, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first female prime minister. Her moderate Authenticity and Modernity Party (Pam) got the most seats in last week’s legislative elections.

She has made young Moroccans the centrepiece of her program, pledging to “restore hope” in a society under increasing economic and social challenges. The country is seeing massive youth unrest, as seen by a large border rush on the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in July and violent Generation Z riots last year.

The 50-year-old lawyer has been Marrakesh’s mayor for several years and was a minister in the previous coalition government. El Mansouri will have to engage with other parties to create a coalition because the PAM did not win an outright majority, however her experience as national coordinator may help.

Her responsibilities will include addressing unemployment, rising living costs, and socioeconomic inequities, particularly among young people.”Young people are going through a crisis, and we must provide them with answers,” she stated during the campaign. “We want to restore their hope, not only through speeches, but through concrete solutions.
