Madagascar: Despite The Dissolution of The Government, Gen Z-led Protests Persist

On Monday evening, President Andry Rajoelina announced the extraordinary decision on public television. He acknowledged the shortcomings of his administration and offered his condolences to the families of those slain during the protests.

However, the government’s dismissal did not subdue the protestors’ ire, and their primary demand—the resignation of the head of state remains unaltered. The government did nothing to us, even if he dismissed the officials. He, not the government, is in charge of the nation.

Starting Thursday, protesters went to Madagascar’s streets to voice their disapproval over the country’s frequent power and water outages. These Gen-Z-led demonstrations are the biggest to hit Madagascar in recent memory and the biggest obstacle Rajoelina has had to overcome since winning reelection in 2023.

A midnight curfew has been enforced by the authorities in Antananarivo on Thursday and in other major cities since Friday in retaliation. Additionally, police on the ground regularly shot protesters with rubber bullets and sprayed tear gas. According to the UN, the protests have resulted in at least 22 fatalities and over 100 injuries. The Malagasy Ministry of Foreign Affairs has contested these figures.
