Macron to Trump: Don’t Back Down from Putin Ukraine’s Future is on the Line

Amid U.S.-led talks to end the almost three-year war in Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said he plans to inform U.S. counterpart Donald Trump that it is in the common interest of Americans and Europeans to not “be weak” in the face of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. According to the White House, Macron will visit Washington on Monday to meet with Trump.

Macron stated during a one-hour social media Q&A session on Thursday that he would advise Trump, “You can’t be weak in the face of President Putin.” It’s not in your best interests, it’s not your trademark, and it’s not you. If you are weak against Putin, how can you be credible against China?

Both Ukrainian officials and European allies are concerned about Trump’s recent remarks that mirror Putin’s narrative and his intentions to hold direct talks with Moscow. Macron, meanwhile, asserted that Trump’s approach of generating “uncertainty” in negotiations with Russia would help strengthen Western allies in such negotiations. He believes that Trump is capable of anything,” Macron said, adding that Putin “does not know what he (Trump) is going to do.” “We and Ukraine benefit from this uncertainty.”

“If you let Russia take over Ukraine, it would be unstoppable,” Macron said Trump, indicating that he would try to convince him that the interests of the United States and Europeans are the same.
