Leaders of Egypt and Spain Agree on Rebuilding Gaza

On Wednesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi reaffirmed their governments’ opposition to US President Donald Trump’s plan to depopulate the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian leader urged the international community to back a restoration plan for Gaza “without the transfer of the Palestinian people” during a joint news conference in Madrid.

Their expulsion from the Strip “would be unethical and opposed to international law and United Nations resolutions,” Sánchez noted, adding that it “would have a destabilising effect at a regional. Without the transfer of the Palestinian people from their land to which they cling, and their homeland which they will not accept relinquishing,” El-Sissi emphasised, Gaza reconstruction must proceed.

At the Arab League summit on March 4 in Cairo, Sánchez reaffirmed his support for the two-state solution and for the approval of the enclave’s rebuilding, saying, “Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is part of the future Palestinian state.”

To create an independent Palestinian state in conformity with international law, the Egyptian president further called on the international community to assist in reviving the stalled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.
