Kenya’s Interior Minister Claims that following Fatal Demonstrations, Protestors Attempted a coup

On Thursday, Kipchumba Murkomen, the Interior Minister, assessed the damage caused to companies in Nairobi, the capital, where merchandise was stolen from numerous shops. In order to guarantee prompt arrests, he said police will follow up with the owners whose CCTV footage showed the looters.
Kenyans used social media to organise protests on Wednesday, the first anniversary of massive anti-tax demonstrations that resulted in the storming of parliament and the deaths of at least 60 people. Twenty more have still to be found. The “government has your back,” according to Minister Murkomen, who defended police officers’ actions during the protests on Thursday.
On Wednesday, razor wire was used to block access to the president’s office and parliament, preventing demonstrators from using the highways that connect to these buildings. The state-funded human rights commission reports that the number of Kenyans killed during Wednesday’s statewide demonstrations against police brutality and poor governance has quadrupled to 16.
The rallies, which drew thousands of irate young Kenyans, also resulted in property destruction. Anger-fueled demonstrators destroyed at least two police stations.
