Kenyan Court gets First war Crimes Accusation Against Sudan’s RSF
Victims of alleged war crimes in Sudan urged Kenyan prosecutors Tuesday to examine claims of torture and sexual violence by members of a notorious paramilitary group. It is the first time members of the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, a paramilitary group fighting the Sudanese military for more than three years, have been prosecuted outside Sudan.
Rights groups have accused the group of atrocities that amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The group has ties with the Kenyan government and Kenyan President William Ruto has previously hosted RSF leader Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo for talks he said were aimed at advancing peace efforts in Sudan, a move that has sparked diplomatic tensions.
The case, filed by the international legal NGO Legal Action Worldwide, outlines torture and sexual violence carried out by RSF members at several places in and around Khartoum between April 2023 and March 2025, while the Sudanese capital was under the hands of the paramilitaries.
The 12 victims are calling on Kenya’s Director of Public Prosecutions to sanction charges against 10 members of the RSF, some of whom are thought to be living in Kenya. The Associated Press has contacted the RSF for comment.
