Kenyan Cabinet Dissolution: Public Reaction
Kenyans have started responding to the president’s dissolving of the cabinet.
President William Ruto bowed to pressure and disbanded his cabinet following two weeks of protests against the government breaching the Kenyan parliament, a first in history.
Amos Ouma, a motorbike taxi rider (bodaboda), said, “I want to first thank the Gen Z for their effort because without them probably Ruto would have not made any changes to his cabinet that was already tainted.”
Kenyans are complaining about several former cabinet members, claiming they are incompetent and conceited.
The president has been encouraged by many to appoint competent technocrats in their stead.
The frequency of lawmakers in Ruto’s Cabinet who received jobs in exchange for their support in the general elections of 2022 has also drawn attention from specialists in governance.
“We saw the cabinet was fully incompetent, if I may say that, so we that the president for that step, for that move,” said businessman Patrick Musau.
With the Finance Bill 2024 abandoned, a budget cut is likely, therefore Ruto must fight corruption in his government and implement austerity measures to slash spending.
“We expect that he will select a cabinet made up of individuals with integrity and a fresh perspective for the nation,” said Joseph Ndung’u.
