Kenya: Protests Against US Humanitarian Aid Cuts Shake the Kakuma Refugee Camp
According to local media, police opened fire on protesters during widespread protests on Monday in the Kakuma refugee camp in northwest Kenya. The lack of food and water in the camp sparked the demonstrations.
Residents claim that the camp’s circumstances have drastically worsened and that many people are having difficulty getting basic essentials. The shortages coincide with a decrease in humanitarian help in Kenya as a result of budget reductions from USAID, the US Agency for International Development.
Amnesty International reports that the camp, one of the biggest in the world, is home to about 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers. Congolese refugee Mama Kayembe of Kakuma Refugee Camp stated: “Kenyans have placed all the blame on Donald Trump since he became US president. Trump is held accountable for underpaying workers. Trump is to blame for the hospital’s lack of medication, the fact that we now have to pay school fees, and everything else. We have had enough of Trump.
In addition to causing hunger, the aid restrictions have increased instability in the camp. There are worries that the camp’s position could get worse in the absence of other financing sources.
