John Mahama of Ghana is back in Office as President

In the country’s December 9 presidential election, Mahama received 56 percent of the vote, defeating Vice President and candidate of the ruling party Mahamudu Bawumia, who received 41 percent. He succeeds departing President Nana Akufo-Addo, who held office for two terms.

Wearing the national uniform of the West African nation, the 66-year-old new president declared to a joyful audience dressed in the green, red, black, and white colors of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) party, “Today should mark the opportunity to reset our country.

Presidents Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria, Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, Ibrahim Traore of Burkina Faso, William Ruto of Kenya, Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Brice Oligui Nguema of Gabon were among those in attendance.

The ceremony was attended by former leaders and officials, as well as Presidents Mamadi Doumbouya of Guinea and Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female vice president, was sworn in with Mahama.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose last term was characterized by Ghana’s worst economic crisis in years, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, and a debt default, lost eight years in power after former President Mahama’s landslide return.
